Cut The Right Wire

Single · Released September 21, 2026 · Country / Americana

Everybody knows a house like this one. The door slams, the taillights go down the driveway in the rain, and the man left standing in the kitchen has learned to move very carefully. He isn't angry. He's calculating. Somewhere in this thing is a wire that ends it and a wire that sets it off, and he has been standing there with the shears in his hand long enough that his hands have started to shake.

That's the whole song — a love that's turned into a device. She's “a spark in a room full of gasoline,” the prettiest disaster he's ever seen, and he's walking on eggshells trying to find where her fuse begins. He's not trying to win. He's trying to get out of the room without blowing it up, and still can't stop missing the woman she was before.

Then the last verse turns it over. He comes home with his speech rehearsed in the dashboard light, ready for the fight — and she won't look at him. No warning. No bags by the door. Just silence where the shouting used to be. She'd already made the cut. The red lights stop flashing, the timer shuts down, and the man who spent the whole song afraid of setting it off finds out he was never the one holding the shears.

The title and the idea for this one came from Ethan, Lar Lee’s grandson.

Lyrics

Verse 1

Taillights fading in the driveway rain

Another slammed door shakes the frame

She's a spark in a room full of gasoline

The prettiest disaster that I've ever seen

My boots stay waiting by the door

I miss the woman she was before

Chorus

The red lights flashing

The timers counting down

When the countdown hits zero

I don't want to be around

Yeah I can feel the danger

I can feel the fire

Gotta make sure

I cut the right wire

Verse 2

She's a ticking bomb wound up too tight

One wrong word and the sparks ignite

I'm walking on eggshells balancing on pins

Terrified of finding where her fuse begins

My hands are shaking holding the shears

Wondering where I'll be when the smoke finally clears

Chorus

The red lights flashing

The timers counting down

When the countdown hits zero

I don't want to be around

Yeah I can feel the danger

I can feel the fire

Gotta make sure

I cut the right wire

Bridge

Fingers on the cutter

Heartbeat keeping time

I still miss the old her

Before words became a crime

Verse 3

I walked through the shadows ready for a fight

Had my speech rehearsed in the dashboard light

She walked in and wouldn't look at me

Just silence where shouting used to be

No warning signs no bags on the floor

She clipped the wire before she hit the door

Final Chorus

The red lights stopped flashing

The timer shut down

Just a heavy silence

After one last meltdown

Yeah I felt the danger

Yeah I felt the fire

Turns out she's the one

Who cut the right wire
